McKesson's Medical
Imaging Group, previously known as A.L.I.
Technologies Inc. (ALI), has a long
history of success and is today
recognized as the leader in PACS.
ALI was founded in 1986 and by 1988 was
the first company to develop an
electronic picture archiving and
communications system (PACS) based on
personal computer/client server
technology to help hospitals capture,
view, store and manage images from
ultrasound exams. The first installation
was completed in June 1992 at BC Women's
Hospital in Vancouver, Canada.
In 1993, the U.S. Food & Drug
Administration (FDA) granted pre-market
notification clearance (510K) to ALI
UltraPACS. The current generation of
products evolved from these origins. We
are now on the fifth generation of
software and has evolved the product
from the ultrasound modality application
to meet the requirements for complete
enterprise-wide PACS for all
multi-modality applications.
By 1998, ALI's strong success in the
ultrasound market segment led to looking
at the opportunity for PACS in other
imaging departments. In 1999, ALI
expanded into the market for
enterprise-scale image management
systems serving all radiology image
modalities in anticipation of the shift
in the market toward large-scale system
solutions. This required developing an
in-depth understanding of radiology
department workflow for many more
modalities and ensuring the scalability,
reliability and performance of ALI
UltraPACS could meet the more rigorous
and complex conditions in such
large-scale solutions.
